The ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Digital Enhanced Living congratulates our industry partner Dementia Australia on the launch of ‘Talk with Ted‘, a digital training avatar that is designed to improve communication and empathy for care workers working with and supporting people living with dementia.

Talk with Ted is an innovative virtual tool to help ensure our aged care workforce are well-trained and equipped to better support people living with dementia,” Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe said.

Hub Director and A²I² Co-Director Professor Kon Mouzakis said Talk with Ted is an example of how avatar technology can be used to foster empathy and understanding.

“Results from the trial were overwhelmingly positive,” Dr. Anju Curumsing who led the eight-week trial study said. “Carers reported that they developed a better understanding of the behaviours associated with dementia and understood how poor communication can trigger behaviour change.”

Ted, the AI Avatar was developed jointly by Dementia Australia and the Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute (A²I²) through the ARC Research Hub for Digital Enhanced Living.
